The Visitor

My past self must have thought my future self was a rock star. I can’t believe I booked four flights in one day. What was I thinking? I left no margin for error. All my flights had to be on time with no delays.

Well, it all worked out. I am home with severe jet lag!

My bed is calling me. First I need a quick shower to wash the airplane germs away, brush my teeth – which will be heaven – and then as the Dr. Seuss book goes, “Cup, saucer, pillow, bed.”

I love my bed, oh how I have missed you. Sleep is upon me, my mind swirls, darkness closes in, my eyes are heavy, my body is weightless, my breathing is clear, and I am almost to dream land.

“Bang!” Was that a car door? It has to be for the neighbors.

I hear footsteps. No one knows I am home. I fibbed on my return date. I needed a couple extra days for me.

I don’t hear the doorbell or a knock. Ugh! I have to check the door camera. Who could it be? I want to sleep.

It is some woman. I don’t know her. I will ignore it and go to bed.

Why didn’t she ring the bell?

I better check…wait, she disappeared?

She is no longer in the camera. Maybe she went to her car. I will have to look out the spare bedroom window.

No her car is still in the driveway, but she is not in it. Okay, back to the living room.

Oh my God, she is staring in through the back window! I can feel my heart bounding. I can’t breathe, my chest is tight, oh my God, and where is my phone? Crap, it is in my bedroom. How can I get there without her seeing me?

Wait, she is gone. Where did she go now?

I see my phone on my night stand. To my bedroom I go. I need to call someone, but who would I call?

“Ah, how did you get in here? You scared the crap out of me! Who are you? Say something. If this is an alien abduction, it will have to wait. I need sleep.”

“Are you done?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Carole. I am looking for your sister.”

“I don’t have a sister.”

“You do.”

“I don’t, you have the wrong house, the wrong person, and you can’t just break and enter to tell someone they have a sister!”

“Think back on your life, there are gaps and pieces that don’t make sense. I had to make a bold gesture in order for you to take this seriously. It is imperative you find your sister. She is waiting for you.”

“Bang!” Oh my God a car door. Is she here? Wait, I am in bed. I must have been dreaming, but I heard a car door. I should check the door camera, but I am scared. Deep breath, I made four flights in one day. I think I can handle a door camera and a crazy lady.

No one is there. I am not going to the spare bedroom. I know how well that worked out. Out the front door I go.

“Hello Wendy. Hello Dan.”

“Welcome home.”

“Thank you.”

“Did you have a nice vacation?”

“I did, but it is good to be home.”

“I bet.”

“Tell Val hello.”

“I sure will.”

Well, the car door was the neighbor. So much for being incognito, everyone knows I am home now. At this point I don’t care, I need sleep. My bed is calling me. I love my bed, so soft, warm and snuggly…

Ugh, I can’t sleep. I have a sister to find.
