Hello and Welcome!
If you are reading this you are one of the fabulous and fancy guests at the Art in the Workplace Gala . Thank you for joining us.
And more, thank you for clicking on the QR Code. It’s something I thought to experiment with – a wily part of my mixed media tool kit. As artists and creatives, we have so many incredible ways we can share our work. This one is a secret gift to the people who come to MIP to view the exhibit in person.
Community culture and development has been at the core of my professional career. Online interaction is the way of the future, but it only works because it is an expression of the human desire to connect. Remote interaction becomes simpler and easier everyday, and though we have come to accept it as the new normal, we do still have that niggly little voice inside ourselves wondering if it’s really such a good thing to do. There’s a long list of reasons to reject it of course, but that’s not why you’re here – or me either. We’re here for the arty awesomeness! Instead, I want us to look around and see how much the online world innovates positive connection and our exposure to literally infinite human creativity.
This is where we take a pause together and have a look around. You don’t have to look very far in your immediate reality to see how incredible this real-time event absolutely is, and that the creativity is not just on the walls. It’s bursting out of every single person here. Notice the human spirit living between us. That will look like something different to all of us, just like each artist showing here has a unique and special offering, but just notice that: clothes, hair-dos, tattoos, sunglasses, the way we walk…
Ok, now actually do it. I’ll wait:
Look up from your phone, and look around. Take at least 5 breaths of noticing.
Go! What do you see?
Perfect. I guarantee that act of pausing, looking around and noticing, had you see that this event is one big living artistic creation, and that you are a part of it. It wouldn’t be the same without you, couldn’t be. Your contribution to this event is your presence alone. Human connection is a special thing.
As you are standing in front of this collab between my Grandfather and me, you are being pulled into our secret world. If I’m honest, he’s the only person who really knew the extent of my professional work as a homeopath. He wouldn’t laugh when I said things like the above. He was a true teacher. He’d say something like: “interesting, why do you think that”; or “tell me more about that, I want to understand it.” And then he’d listen so deeply that I could see my own human beauty and intelligence. He’d make me into a piece of art that I could witness. He was a talented painter, but his purest art was listening, and guiding people to see their own unique brilliance.
So this is the offering from G and me:
When you are home tonight, away from this event, pause again for a moment and remember the image of what you saw. All of it. Yes, of course the art, but deeper than that. Remember the people. Remember stepping back and seeing the bigger picture of this event. And most important, remember how much it matters that you were here. See your beautiful self too.
So much love,
Adrienne Yeardye
